Understanding layer stacking

Layers can be a powerful tool, but also complex to understand, especially when there are lots of them.

The rendering is set to X-Ray, and in the Filters column, two layers are activated:

The color of the layer will be applied to the nodes in the 3D view, in a semi-transparent style. If multiple layers apply to a node, then the color of the layer whose node is highest in the hierarchy will be used.

In the Scene hierarchy, SmartShape highlights the layer of each node using a color wire on the left of the node's name.

Children of a node are also contained in a their parent's layer, which is why you see these long pink and orange lines.
